HOW TO BUY AND PRINT LARGE WALL ART ON A BUDGET
After the reveal of our home office last week, I got several messages asking about the art in the room. I’m excited to share the process with you today, because it was an inexpensive way to make a big beautiful impact on the room.
I was able to purchase three large 24″ x 36″ instant downloadable prints for approximately $15 total, and then have them printed for another $15.
I ordered this art for our office, but I didn’t allow enough time for shipping, in order for it to arrive in time for the reveal. I already had the frames (which are the RIBBA 24″x’36” from Ikea), and didn’t want to have them empty for the reveal post, so I brainstormed a way to get them filled inexpensively.
In the past, I had read about using engineered prints as an inexpensive way to print large photographs and thought I’d give it a try. The results exceeded my expectations and I wanted to share the process with you. I also used the process for the colorful artwork above the reading chair, in our office, and again was thrilled with the colors and result.
PURCHASING INSTANT DOWNLOADABLE ART
The first step in the process is finding an instant downloadable art print that you love. The options are endless, and I’ve found the best place to find them is on Etsy. Most shops list the sizes the prints come in under the art listing. Then once you complete the purchase they immediately email the image, with all different sized files.
* Please note, most shops can send you a larger file in the 24″ x 36″ size if you request it. The 24″ x 36″ sized print doesn’t seem to be a standard size they list as an available size (although some did), however, MOST of the time if you send them a message they can email you a separate file with the larger sized print. I recommend contacting the shop and asking if that’s an option prior to purchasing.
When ordering your large engineered print you will need the exact size file to print. For example, if they you want to order a 24″ x 36″ engineered print, you will need a file formatted to that exact size.
MY ETSY ART
I rounded up some other instant downloads that caught my eye to share with you. There are SO MANY amazing shops on Etsy it was hard to narrow it down.

PRINTING LARGE WALL ART AT STAPLES
I think the first thing you should know is that these engineered prints are printed on very thin paper. The weight of the papers is similar to butcher paper…I was surprised by that, because none of the other articles I read on this process mentioned that. When the print is in the frame it is not noticeable in my opinion, if and here’s a big IF…you are careful not to wrinkle the paper prior to, or in the process of, getting the print into the frame. You can see wrinkles in the corner of the black and white print on the right hand side. Learn from my mistake and very carefully place your print into the frame. I was diligent with the other two and they lay perfectly smooth in the frame. That’s the key to disguising the very thin weight of the paper.
STAPLES was the only online source that I looked at that offered both color and black & white engineered prints. On the staples.com website you can select your local store pick up and pick them up, that’s what I did, and they were ready within 2 hours. If you plan on picking them up at your local store, make sure you choose your local store on their website before you place your printing order. Or, you can have them mailed if you don’t live near a Staples.
Once you’re on the Staples.com website go to…

From there the below graphic walks you through how to customize according to your printing needs.
NOTE-after step two that is when you upload your image. The Staples website wasn’t allowing me to upload the image directly from my Dropbox, even though that was listed as an option. I’m not sure if it was the websites issue or my computers. I saved the image to my computer and had no issue uploading the file from there.
That’s it, for the color 24″ x 36″ print it cost $5.89, and the black and white 24″ x 36″ print cost $3.59.
I am so excited with this inexpensive solution to printing large or small wall art. I can’t wait to plan my next gallery wall!
