MY LATEST DECORATING MISTAKE
Whenever you are decorating a room or home there is always an element of trial and error. I usually make a master plan for a space, and then choose items that compliment the look and feel I’m going for. I always leave price tags on because you just don’t know what will make the final cut until you see it all come together. This goes for my own home, whether I’m adding a new pillow or a new rug, sometimes it just doesn’t end up feeling right once you’ve gotten home.
This is exactly what happened with my dining room rug. You may remember I did a whole blog post on MY NEW DINING ROOM RUG a few months ago. I actually do love this rug, but something about it just didn’t feel right for the dining room.
Below is the neutral rug that I thought was going to be my new favorite rug.
I had convinced myself to go with a neutral rug, so when I set the table, or the holidays rolled around the rug would compliment any colors that I put on top of the table. I do love the neutral pattern, however with the neutral dark table and linen chairs the space just didn’t have any life in it. Enter my NEW RUG in my favorite accent color, blue!
Please excuse the wrinkles, I was so excited to share this with you I unrolled it and started snapping pics, before the wrinkles were all worked out. After living with the neutral rug a few weeks I new I missed having color in this space. I also knew I wanted to bring in the color blue. I found some amazing blue rugs, the hardest part was choosing just one.
FAVORITE BLUE RUGS
I adored our previous dining room rug, that has found a new home in our family room. It is a similar shade of blue, and I didn’t realize how much I would miss that pop of my favorite color until I no longer had it.
As soon as I laid down this new, blue, beauty I new I made the right decision this time!
Here is how I remedy decorating mistakes when I make them
HOW TO FIX A DECORATING MISTAKE
If you’re able-return it! I always leave tags on new items until the item is in place and I’ve leaved with it for a few days. If at that point I’m not feeling it I return it. For items purchased online, a lot of companies offer free shipping and free returns, so make sure you keep all the packing material until you’ve fully decided to keep an item.
Another option is decide if you can use it in another part of your home. That’s what I’m going to do with the neutral rug. I have some upcoming plans to update our bedroom and I think the rug will work well in their. I’ll use it under THIS BED that I ordered months ago and I just haven’t made the time yet to start on our bedroom.
One other option is to sell the item. If you’ve been living with a piece of furniture, or decor item that just never felt quite right, let me encourage you to sell it. I have done this quite a bit in the last year. It always feel good to recoup a little of the money you’ve spent. I’ve had the best luck selling household items in the Facebook Marketplace,or the Let Go app.
I hope this encourages you, just know that everyone makes mistakes along the way. And this decorating journey that we all love has it’s bumps in the road! What I have learned over the years is it’s worth the inconvenience and effort to fix our mistakes.
