Sharing today my favorite method for cleaning area rugs. This is our family room and the most used area of our home. I love light colored rugs in this space because our extra large sectional is a darker color and the lighter rug really helps brighten and lighten the space.
We have an active family and a hairy dog! So I’ve put this method to the test!
Cleaning Area Rugs-How To
STEP ONE-Apply Scotch Gaurd Rug and Carpet Protector
Here are the two products that I’ve found work the best. Ideally you will want to apply the Scotch Gaurd Rug and Carpet Protector on a new rug, as soon as you get it. However, you can always clean the rug you have and then apply it. Let the protectant dry 2-4 hours in between coats. My rug is 8×10 and I used two cans total. So essentially for this size rug you need one can per coat. The scotch gaurd is a protectant that repels stains from setting in. For high traffic areas repeat the process every 6 mos. I’ve found this really helps prevent that overall dinginess from occurring.
STEP TWO-Use OXY Spot and Stain Remover if stains or spills occur
Accidents are inevitably going to happen, and when they do I’ve found the Oxy Stain Remover works the best. What I like about it is the stain comes right up, and it also adds a layer of scotch gaurd protection to prevent and protect the area you just cleaned. This is wonderful because most cleaners I’ve tried take out the stain but after a while it comes back and looks worse than ever. With most cleaners if you don’t remove every trace of the cleaner the dirt will actually adhere to the left over cleaner. That’s the beauty of this cleaner, you don’t have any staining that just reappears after a few weeks.
I hope passing this method along takes out some frustration while you’re cleaning your area rugs, as well as keeps your rugs looking fresh and new!
