BACKYARD MAKEOVER REVEAL
I’m thrilled to share this beautiful backyard makeover project with you today. If you’ve been here awhile you remember when I shared the design plan with you HERE. Today I get to share the completed project with you. To make this project extra special, this is my sister-in-law’s (who happens to be one of my best friends) amazing yard! I helped her bring her vision to life and now that it’s done it’s I’m so happy that she has a space she loves and gets to relax in and enjoy!
This is the view from her kitchen doors. The vision was to create an open and inviting space, along with keeping everything we added low maintenance. Her yard never drained properly and the grass was always soggy, that was one of her main concerns, and she also was tired of maintaining the grass that nobody used. She really wanted to create a space that the whole family could enjoy and would be a sanctuary to entertain friends and family.
Previously the backyard was covered with a large pergola that extended from the house into a large portion of the backyard. The picture below is the same view as the picture above, you can see how the pergola made the space feel closed in. We removed the pergola, however it did provide a lot of shade, so we added two large umbrellas to give them some shade in the new yard. There are also two new olive trees in each corner of the yard, as they grow and mature they will filter the sunlight.
When you compare the two pictures above you can see that the wall in which the fireplace was added was raised about a foot higher, and new caps where added to the wall, as well as the planters. Everything also got a fresh coat of smooth stucco. The built-in FIREPLACE she added really became the focal point of the yard, but more on that a little later.
We layered two outdoor rugs to anchor the sitting area. Boy have outdoor rugs come along way, both of them are so soft! I’ll link the rugs, and all the sitting area sources below. Most of the items are currently on sale!!!
SOURCES FOR THE SITTING AREA
As I mentioned earlier this new fireplace is the star of the backyard. My SIL spent a lot of time on Pinterest deciding on just the right shape and size, and it really paid off! It has a smooth stucco finish, capped with a pretty gray concrete, and she picked out the perfect reclaimed beam for the mantle.
When I was over there taking pictures a few days ago she mention that her favorite pieces of furniture are these nylon, woven chairs in front of the fireplace. The graphic design is so interesting and to be honest we knew they’d look amazing, but weren’t convinced they’d be that comfortable. She was willing to take the chance and ordered them online. Well, they are SO COMFORTABLE, everyone is pleasantly surprised when they sit in them. And we added the striped poufs to kick your feet up on while enjoying the fireplace.
I linked both the chairs and the poufs below. The chairs are currently 50% off, and the pouf’s are made with a removable cover so you can throw them in the washer whenever you need to.
Directly behind the seating area we created an inviting place to dine. Here we placed a second umbrella, this one is rectangular and provides shade to the whole table. I took these pictures in the morning and you can see how much sun it’s flooded with. Umbrellas are a necessity.
The table and bench are from the same collection as the sofa and chairs in the sitting area. So things weren’t too matchy-matchy we broke up the dining set with these amazing gray rope chairs. They are my personal favorite, I love the design and how amazingly comfortable they are! They are 50% off right now too!
This space has really become a wonderful place to dine alfresco. We have such beautiful, warm evenings here in Southern California. I know the dining area will be put to good use.
Below is another before picture, it shows the current dining space before the makeover. It was a small patch of grass that didn’t wasn’t being utilized. In Southern California we have small backyards, so it’s wonderful that she’s now able to utilize every inch with the new design.
All of the previous grass and concrete was taken out and replaced by pavers. They have an interesting, varied pattern, and are as low maintenance as you can get-no more soggy grass to contend with!
DINING AREA SOURCES
All of these items are on a MAJOR sale (50% off major), get them while they last. You cannot beat the quality for the price.
The plants are a major element in this makeover, and I cannot say enough about how knowledgeable the local landscape specialists are at PLANTENDERS. Laurie designed the low-maintenance, drought tolerant plan for her and it is incredible! If you are in Orange County, you need to take a trip to see them. Their selection of plants is incredible and you can’t beat their prices.
The entire yard was replanted, and I cannot wait to see how the planting beds will continue to mature and fill in.
A backyard makeover isn’t complete without a cornhole set!
I love my sister-in-law so much and I am so happy for her and her family. It was a real treat for me that I got to help her make the furniture selections for this space. I loved every minute of watching this space transform.
