ANNIVERSARY TRIP CABO RECAP
If you follow me on Instagram you saw some highlights of our recent 4 day trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I had several requests to share the details of where we went, where we stayed, and what we did. So, here’s my Cabo travel Guide and Recap.
September 20 we celebrated 20 years of marriage! I cannot believe how fast time has gone. We felt it was a real milestone and wanted to plan something special. In 20 years we’ve had many wins and many loses, together we’ve celebrated and cried. On our twenty year journey we’ve had 2 kids, 3 dogs, 4 houses and a lot of life has been lived. It was important to us to spend some time looking back, reminisce and plan for the future.
We did all of that, while laying poolside, sipping drinks, and eating guacamole, It was wonderful!
WHERE WE WENT
We stayed in San Jose Del Cabo. It is a 25 minute, easy drive south of the airport. If you were to drive another 20 minutes south on the 1, you’d come to Cabo San Lucas. In those two towns and all along the corridor between them you’ll find beach front hotels.
WHERE WE STAYED
There are SO many choices on where to stay in that area, I really agonized over which hotel to choose. I read so many reviews and finally settled on THE WESTIN. It was recently remodeled so I knew everything would be fresh and new, and there were so many reviews that commented on how nice the hotel staff was. After experiencing it, I couldn’t agree more!
We used credit card points to book the hotel and The Westin was one of the more reasonable hotels to use points for. I think that’s why it far exceeded my expectations. It had 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor but I would give it a 5.
The way the hotel was designed every room faces out to the ocean. The picture above is the tower we stayed in. Just to the left there is another smaller tower. It is a large property but they did a nice job centralizing the pools, casual restaurants, and market, or shall I say mercado 🙂
The day I wore THIS COVER UP to the pool I got so many compliments-I think it’s the sleeves 🙂
The upper pool, is a shaded adults only pool. Below that you’ll find a pool with a swim up bar, and a larger pool just to the left for adults and families. When we were there the hotel was 90% occupied, which surprised us because the pools were never crowded. Maybe because school is back in session? Whatever the reason it was so nice, we had no problem finding poolside chairs, or space along the infinity pool edge.
Make Time For A Massage
We treated our selves to massages. They have a beautiful spa at the hotel, but we thought it would be a treat to have our massages outside on the beach. The cost is the same, and it was lovely. We booked a 9am massage, I think later then that it may have been to hot to enjoy it outside. My husband had the best massage he’s ever had, if you go ask for Omar.
There are steps leading down to the beach. The sand is fairly course, but they have lounge chairs set up if you’d like to layout on the beach. This isn’t a long stretch of beach, so if you like to take long walks on the sand, this won’t be the hotel for you. Also, if you like to swim in the ocean this isn’t a swim beach. There is a steep drop off once you’re in the water, and the waves break on shore.
WHERE WE ATE
FLORA FARMS AND FIELD KITCHEN
Prior to the trip we had heard from several people that we needed to go to FLORA FARMS. It was a 25 min. drive from the hotel up into the local mountain. It is a working organic farm, that has an enchanting restaurant, shops, and they offer various cooking classes.
The shops on the ground, are beautiful, they are divided into little cottages. They were a little on the high end but a great place to find that perfect souvenir.
Everywhere you turn there is something unique and interesting to see. The farm sits on 25 acres, and they’ve set up conversation areas all through out the grassy areas surrounding the restaurant. If you plan on visiting make sure you allow time to explore the grounds and just hang out on the property.
This is inside the open air restaurant. They also have tables all along the patio just to side of the bar area. We choose to sit outside, the night we were there they had live music, it was a gorgeous evening for dining alfresco.
The other place we loved is the El CIRUELO, which is at the top of The Westin property. Even if you decide not to stay at The Westin I would recommend making reservations to dine here.
This is the view from the table we sat at. You can see up the coastline and it was breathtaking! The food was delicious, we actually preferred their food over the Flora Farms food. Both were delicious and Flora Farms was so unique and had more to offer in terms of cocktails. If you go to El Ciruelo order the Lava Cake with Vanilla ice cream for dessert. YUM!
7 Seas Restaurant
The 7 Seas was recommended to us by a friend, we didn’t dine their but he told us the food was delicious and the atmosphere is amazing. It is right on the beach, and a 2 minute drive north from The Westin.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
- If you are planning on surfing (if we go back with the kids this will be on our agenda), the beaches with surf spots are in Cabo San Lucas.
- Rent a car. Everything is spread out, and cars were inexpensive to rent. There are ample shuttles, but then you’re stuck to their time table. The taxis are not cheap and you could use that same money to rent a car.
- If you’re looking for night life, you may want to stay in Cabo San Lucas versus San Jose Del Cabo.
- There are plenty of excursion opportunities-fishing, boat cruises, golfing, off-roading, surfing, etc. We just choose to lounge and relax.
- A lot of the coastline is not swim-able. If that is important to you, I’d research hotels that offer a swim beach. We went to Chileano Beach to get into the water one afternoon. It was a 5 minute drive south from the hotel.
They had this sign on our table at Flora Farms
